New Contract Signed: Eburru Wellhead Geothermal Power Plant
GDA has signed a contract with Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen) for the design, supply, and commissioning of a wellhead geothermal power plant at Eburru. The equipment supplied will include a 2.5 MW steam turbine generator set complete with auxiliary systems and controls. The contract was signed on October 1, 2009, and became effective on December 21, 2009.
The steam turbine is being manufactured by Elliott Turbomachinery in Jeanette, PA. It will drive a synchronous generator manufactured by Kato Engineering in Mankato, MN, through a speed reduction gear manufactured by Lufkin Industries in Lufkin, TX.
KenGen is the leading electric power generation company in Kenya, producing about 80% of the electricity consumed in the country. They currently own and operate two geothermal power stations with a total production of 115 MW.
Eburru is located approximately 2 hours outside of the capital, Nairobi, in Kenya’s countryside in the Great Rift Valley. The Eburru geothermal field is along the flanks of the Ol Doinyo Eburru Volcano and is situated 11 km northwest of Lake Naivasha.
