GDA has signed a contract with Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen) for the design, supply, and commissioning of a wellhead geothermal power plant at Eburru. The equipment supplied will include a 2.5 MW steam turbine generator set complete with auxiliary systems and controls. The contract was signed on October 1, 2009, and became effective on December 21, 2009.

The steam turbine is being manufactured by Elliott Turbomachinery in Jeanette, PA. It will drive a synchronous generator manufactured by Kato Engineering in Mankato, MN, through a speed reduction gear manufactured by Lufkin Industries in Lufkin, TX.

KenGen is the leading electric power generation company in Kenya, producing about 80% of the electricity consumed in the country. They currently own and operate two geothermal power stations with a total production of 115 MW.

Eburru is located approximately 2 hours outside of the capital, Nairobi, in Kenya's countryside in the Great Rift Valley. The Eburru geothermal field is along the flanks of the Ol Doinyo Eburru Volcano and is situated 11 km northwest of Lake Naivasha.

GDA Completes Second Stage of Rehabilitation of Aluto Langano Geothermal Power Plant

Geothermal Development Associates (GDA), working closely with the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo), succeeded in repairing and recommissioning the Ormat Energy Converter (OEC) at the Aluto Langano geothermal plant and wellfield on the 18th of July, 2009. The plant is now generating up to 4 MW. GDA and EEPCo completed the first stage of repairs (the GCCU) in 2007.

The three year long rehabilitation effort involved extensive assessment, repair and testing of both the plant and wellfield, including complete re-tubing of the heat exchangers. In addition, GDA provided EEPCo personnel with training in plant and wellfield operations. EEPCo considers the rehabilitation a success and is enthusiastic about adding more geothermal power projects.

The Aluto Langano plant is the first and only geothermal power plant in Ethiopia and the only operating geothermal power plant in Africa outside of Kenya.

GDA Completes First Stage of Rehabilitation of Aluto Langano Geothermal Power Plant in Ethiopia

Geothermal Development Associates (GDA), working closely with the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCO), succeeded in repairing and restarting the Geothermal Combined Cycle Unit (GCCU) at the Aluto Langano geothermal plant and wellfield on the 9th of June 2007.

The year-long rehabilitation effort involved extensive assessment, repair and testing of both the plant and wellfield. In addition, GDA provided EEPCO personnel with training in plant and wellfield operations.

The plant, which is located in south central Ethiopia, was installed and commissioned in 1998 and was designed to generate 8.5 MW. It operated for approximately one year before experiencing both resource and plant problems that required its partial shutdown in 2000 and complete shutdown in 2002. GDA and EEPCO are completing the repairs needed at the plant and wellfield so that it may become fully operational as soon as possible.

The Aluto Langano plant is the first and only geothermal power plant in Ethiopia and the only operating geothermal power plant in Africa outside of Kenya.
